Seeking a Friend for the End of the World

Global gallows humour with a soft centre

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World
Pretty silly stuff, guys.
A heartfelt road trip where everyone dies, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World offers a poignant take on armageddon. Plans to stop an asteroid have failed, leaving humanity with three weeks to embrace its worst impulses before impact. His friends shoot heroin at drunken orgies, but Dodge (a sullen Steve Carrell) prefers to regret a life of failures. That is until his spirited neighbour (Keira Knightley) needs to be saved from a riot and Dodge offers her a deal; he helps her get back to her family, if she helps him find his long-lost true love. Carrell and Knightley are an odd pairing, especially as potential romantic partners, but they're also both acute actors. Able to shift on an emotional dime from consequence-free exuberance to devastating anguish. This is a film of global gallows humour, earnestly pleading that it's never too late to meet someone new.
