Rev Hank

Longhorn (Reverb Ranch)

Mike Diablo of the Urban Surf Kings must be both organized and nimble-fingered. Longhorn is named for the bass he played to back the tracks made in a one-day session with drummer Frank den Haan, a dozen mostly original instrumentals. You've got one guitar instead of the Kings' usual two with hints of metal and fuzz deepening the spectrum. Diablo's tribute to Link Wray, "Devil Ray," is pretty much Wray's 1958 hit, "Rumble," in a new key. Creedence/Fogerty fans will go for "Hey Eddie," dangling that swamp quiver over a surf bottom. It's tight improvising, fluid composition or probably a bit of both.
