Laura Mae from Osha Mae Soap offers advice on how to naturally brighten, smooth and prime your complexion before the big day.

I’m having a winter wedding and want my skin to glow on my wedding day. Do you have any advice for brightening up dull, flaky winter skin?

I recommend an aromatherapy treatment, beginning approximately one month ahead of your wedding date. Apply each product on a test patch on your skin in advance of the whole treatment to ensure no adverse allergic reactions. A treatment involving a serum, a steam, an exfoliant, toner and moisturizer works best. Remember to drink lots of water!  If you complete the whole treatment several weeks in advance of your wedding date, you’ll be able to tell how you respond to the complete facial. Once you are pleased with your trial facial try applying this treatment once a week before your wedding day. You’ll notice that your skin’s softness and complexion will have improved, and you can say goodbye to flakiness.

I have sensitive skin and I often have reactions to exfoliants and some moisturizers. What are some alternatives I can try?

If you can eat it, you can safely apply it on your skin without adverse reactions. Try vegetable and nut oils, earth-derived clays, oatmeal, ground almonds, steamed, mashed carrots, strawberries, yogurt, seaweed, persimmons or bananas.  Lovely oils like olive, jojoba, apricot kernel, coconut, almond, grapeseed or sunflower are great moisturizers to apply directly on your skin. Depending on your skin type, they can be applied before bed for a intense overnight treatment. This is the purest way to moisturize the skin without the harmful chemical emulsifiers and preservatives typically in all commercial lotions and creams

.

Herbal clay masks for face and body are gently exfoliating and detoxifying.

Avoid using commercially manufactured products. They have indefinite shelf lives which means they may not be fresh. They can contain harsh preservatives and synthetic fragrances that can trigger allergic reactions in sensitive and non-sensitive individuals.

Trying to understand the ingredients listings on some products can leave you feeling that you need to return to chemistry class. We say, “If you can’t pronounce an ingredient, avoid it.”

I use a heavier moisturizer during the winter which sometimes makes me a bit shiny, and my make-up tends to slide off after a while. I’ll need a good moisturizing base for my wedding day make-up but want to avoid this happening.  Any tips?

I would recommend using an intense moisturizer during the evening before the wedding day. This is an excellent way to wake up hydrated. Look into a good quality toxin and heavy- metal-free make-up and be sure to find a hydrating foundation.
