Bone-creepy The Woman in Black

Daniel Radcliffe commits to Hammer horror

Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe) is a lawyer settling the seaside estate of a woman whose child drowned near the creepy old home. The local villagers aren’t happy to see him, since every time someone goes to the gothic pile, the ghostly lady of the title appears and children die. The Woman in Black is an old-fashioned haunted house picture from the Hammer Horror studio especially designed to freak out parents of youngsters, but there are scares aplenty for the rest of us, too. The movie, avoiding gore but piling on the things that go bump in the dark, delivers a sense of dread like damp getting in your bones. And Radcliffe---playing the stiff-upper-lipped Peter Cushing role---convinces in his first adult lead.
