“Cutesy Pukesy consists of paintings portraying vomit, diseases and snot using cutesy materials. The content of work is being described with glitter, bright bubblegum colors and repetitive brush marks to create a juxtaposition within theme and materials. The work is usually abstract, though realistic imagery sometimes is present within the paintings,” says Bartlett. “The idea is to delight and disgust the viewer.”
Bartlett chose to mix the idea of repellent and attractive due to her “own personal attraction to glitter and bright colors. I wanted to be able to use these materials within my work, but also use them in a new or different manner.”
Cutesy Pukesy features pieces that are full of life, lit up with electric colours applied with what Bartlett dubs “the gesture of vomit. The spewing, flowing sort of movement is something I became interested in,” she says. “I've been trying to re-create this movement through the work.” Those with cast iron stomachs can see her work at the Anna Leonowens Gallery until Saturday, October 8.
