Bad Teacher barely passes

Cameron Diaz not terribly shocking, sometimes amusing

Jake Kasdan’s comedy is a series of disjointed gags and one-liners without a satisfying through-line, intermittently amusing but ultimately unsatisfying. Cameron Diaz plays the unprofessional educator, Elizabeth, whose teaching repertoire consists of R-rated movies and whose life ambition amounts to finding a sugar daddy. Spotting a candidate for that role in a wealthy colleague (Justin Timberlake), she starts fundraising for the surgically-enhanced boobs she figures will give her the edge on a goody-goody rival teacher (Lucy Punch). We’re meant to be shocked by Elizabeth, whose habits included cussing, drinking, drug use, offensive remarks and humiliating students, but she elicits even fewer gasps than laughs. The bright spot is a low-key performance by Jason Segel as a gym teacher who tries---but not too hard---to woo Elizabeth.
