Judo

Because why should teenagers get to hog all the Canada Games fun? (part 12)

Judo
Canada Games fighters wear a gi, but beginners only need a t-shirt and shorts to try judo.

Judo is the martial art of using your opponent’s own strength against them, making it a great self-defence sport. You won’t learn how to strike or punch, but you will be able to throw your opponent to the ground and subdue them. The Halifax Judo Academy, which operates out of the King’s College Gym, offers night classes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8pm to 9:45pm. For your first drop-in class, which is free, just wear a loose tee and shorts. For subsequent classes you’ll need to a robe-like uniform called a gi, which costs around $100, and a monthly membership, which is about $60.
