Voices Remembered

Mourning and celebration go hand in hand in the annual concert presented by local choirs Halifax Camerata and Xara

Solemn, dignified and moving are all good adjectives to describe the Voices Remembered concert performed by Xara and Halifax Camerata at Saint Patrick’s Church. Divine, soul-stirring and heart-touching are even better ones. Since 2004, Camerata has presented an annual concert to honour both those who lost their lives in war and also to memorialize loved ones who are no longer with us. Last night’s concert was an eclectic mix of music from around the world and included the world premier of a lovely, inspiring piece about the life-affirming power of music called “Many Winters” by Ontario composer Jeff Enns. And as a testament to that power, it must be noted that Xara’s rendition of “Remember Me” (with lyrics by Christina Rosetti) had most of the audience reaching for their handkerchiefs. There is something very comforting about gathering together to grieve and remember, and this special concert provides a beautiful balm for the soul.
