Trust M. Night Shyamalan to suck the blood out of a good idea. Shyamalan didn’t direct Devil---that would be John Erick Dowdle (Quarantine)---but as the first film in his Night Chronicles series, it bears his unmistakeable imprint. Five strangers stuck in an elevator start dying one by one, and no one can figure out who the murderer is. Each of the characters has a morally questionable past, and each is supremely irritating, but only one is Beelzebub himself. We know the prince of darkness is involved because a religious security guard (Jacob Vargas) keeps breaking in to narrate in voiceover or exposit to an intense detective (Chris Messina). The guard’s yammering keeps the audience a step ahead of the plot, ensuring that none of the scares leave a mark.
