Neptune's Romeo and Juliet: a gorgeous production

Neptune Theatre's season opener is a treat for the eyes---and ears.

The Neptune season-opener Romeo and Juliet is a gorgeous production bedecked with acres of fine fabrics and cleverly constructed sets. However, this show is not just a treat for the eyes, but for the ears as well. Shakespeare's familiar words spring to life in the mouths of this remarkable cast. Local actress Sarah English is believable and beguiling as a passionate young teen in the throws of first love, and is well matched by Derek Moran as her impulsive Romeo. Susan Stackhouse brings heart and humour to her role as Juliet's faithful nurse and Stephen Gartner stands out as the bawdy, lively Mercutio. The sword fighting is edge-of-your-seat exciting, but those in the front row would do well to sit back, lest they get poked by the gentlemen's truly eye-popping cod pieces.
