SuperNova: The Misfit

A talented actress and thought-provoking play.

There’s a lot to like about Anita Majumdar’s exploration of so-called “honour killings”, not the least of which is the actress herself. Majumdar is talented mimic, bringing to like a whole cast of quirky, memorable characters. She is also a breathtakingly graceful dancer and a playwright adept at using humour to explore difficult topics. The story is narrated by Naz, an Indo-Canadian Kathak dancer who has brought shame to her family and been disowned for marrying an Indian boy of whom they disapprove. There are problems with the way Naz’s story is told: It’s not always easy to follow and it is very difficult to believe that the hardworking and responsible Naz would give up everything for this particular boy, who is an unlikable gangsta poseur. But problems aside, The Misfit ends up being both entertaining and thought-provoking.
