Local experimental rock heroes Heaven For Real are emerging from a relatively quiet few months this week with a renewed energy and a brand-new tape, Live In Japan.
The band, which currently features Mark Grundy, Scott Grundy, Nathan Doucet and Cher Hann, toured Japan last year behind its 2016 Mint Records debut Kill Your Memory. It's an experience that left the band with a bunch of live audio and a desire to keep a record of the experience, and it will celebrate the release of the Live in Japan tape with a show at the Seahorse with Aquakultre and Century Egg.
Scott Grundy explains that the idea for the tape came out of the work—both audio and visual—visual artist Meghan Ross produced during the band's travels.
"We hadn't really planned to do it," he says of the tape, "it all came about afterwards. We had Meghan with us, who came over for documentation of the trip. She's an artist, so she did photography for her own practice and also captured some audio—that's what the release turned into."
Grundy adds that the packaging for the tape will include some of Ross' photos from their trip—both the tape and Friday's show at the Seahorse should offer both a snapshot of where the band is right now and a glimpse of what's to come next.
When asked about the material that the live tape covers, Grundy laughs. "Everything," he says. "We played some newer material—I think there are two new songs that are unreleased—but one of [the songs] is even from our very first release and we revamped it for the tour. So the recordings of what we're releasing are authentic to what the set was.
"It was really sweet for us just to experience meeting new people and a way different culture, so we wanted to share that."
