My summer: Amelia Curran, musician

Originally from Newfoundland, Curran started playing as a busker in St. John's in the mid-'90s "out of pure necessity." She now has four records under her belt since 2000---the last, War Brides, was released nationally by Six Shooter records. The follow-up is due September 1, called Hunter, Hunter.

The Coast: When you think of summer here in Halifax, what comes to mind?

Amelia Curran: Summer is always a doozy that I have little recollection of, and usually involves racing back and forth across the country, which makes time pass too quickly. I'm that person---the one who complains about the heat, and then complains about the cold a few months later.

TC: So, when you are here, what do you enjoy doing when the weather is good?

AC: What's great about Halifax is that you can spend 10 minutes in a car and be out of the downtown trudge and into the summery greatness of lakes and beaches.

TC: And in summer 2009: Plans? Adventures? Anything happening in town, any event, you are hoping to attend?

AC: I'm going to be on tour all summer---really excited to hit the Winnipeg Folk Festival (where Elvis Costello is playing) and the Calgary Folk Festival (where Mavis Staples is playing). The only unfortunate thing is that I can't be here to flip the bird to Paul McCartney---save a seal, club a McCartney! What an asshole. I wonder if he'll know what province he's in this time.
