FSC Certified Woodlots & Sawmills

The Forest Stewardship Council is an internationally recognized body that ensures commercially used forests are managed sustainably and responsibly. There are a number of FSC certified woodlots in the Halifax area, and sawmills that use them. Look here for more information: fsccanada.org.

Forestex Ltd.
Mooseland, NS
902-772-2352 Wade Prest runs his own, small sawmill where he processes high-quality lumber and wood products from a 600 acre, sustainably managed property near Sheet Harbour, one of the first private woodlots in the region to be FSC certified.

J A Turner & Sons
RR #2 Bridgewater, NS 902-543-7404 Wade Turner and his company are just starting up in ecologically sourced wood, distinguishing themselves from the larger clear-cutting operations by offering a specialty product: wood purchased from FSC certified lots on the south shore---such as the one owned by neighbour Kevin Veinotte.

Kevin Veinotte
Bridgewater, NS 902-543-1271 Veinotte is the seventh generation on his property in the LaHave River Valley, not far from Bridgewater. For four years his woodlot has been FSC certified, over some 600 acres, 450 of which is forested. In 2007 his property was the provincial winner of woodlot of the year, and beyond those accolades, Veinotte runs a certified organic farm, with beef, lamb, pork, chicken and eggs. Look for him at area farmers' markets.
