As thousands of cruise ship passengers disembark through Halifax Seaport, they’re now going to be greeted by more than just Beavertail sugar-rushes. PORTloggia is Anna Leonowens Gallery’s new exhibition, performance and event space, at NSCAD University’s Port Campus.
On October 6, Anna Leononwens opened the Audio Dome, a miniature sound gallery curated by Craig Leonard, featuring a new sound piece each week, opening on Mondays (corresponding with Anna's schedule). The Audio Dome is located at the north entrance of PORTloggia, approximately eight feet from the ground, allowing the speaker to focus the sound downward for a single listener.
From October 13-19, listen to Silenzio by Robert Bean, which "presents the aural space of the Sistine Chapel as the murmur of voices and a desire for speech. The work foregrounds the acoustic experience of a site historically associated with the visual authority of Renaissance frescos. "Silenzio is a souvenir of polyphony, the story of Babel and the search for authenticity implied by art, religion and tourism. The disciplinary silencing of dialogue generated by tourists and pilgrims converges with the pious culpability associated with asking forgiveness."
Future installations include works by Chris Lackey (Oct 20-26) and Yulia Startsev (Oct 27-Nov 2).
