9 is always interesting to look at, but hard to understand

What on Earth happened in 9, an animated post-apocalyptic adventure featuring a voice cast of Christopher Plummer, Elijah Wood and John C. Reilly? 9 (voiced by Wood), who looks like a burlap rag doll, wakes up in a world terrorized by machines out of the Terminator films’ Skynet nightmare, finds his goggle-eyed, potato-sacked brethren (Reilly and Plummer) and convinces them to come out of hiding and fight. Admittedly, I had to refer to to come up with that plotline; 9 dumps us in its world and jerks us along from exposition to action sequence to mumbo-jumbo plot details, to chase scene and back again. 9 is always interesting to look at, but obtuse storytelling renders it difficult to make head or tail of what’s on screen.
