50/50 goes halfsies with comedy and pathos

Gordon-Levitt shines as the guy fighting cancer

It's trite, but not inaccurate, to say 50/50 is an even split between comedy and pathos. Based on screenwriter Will Reiser's real-life cancer battle, the movie sees Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception) as Adam, a young man forced to deal with a drastic diagnosis that renders him a coin-toss away from death. Seth Rogen plays the best friend and splendidly leads a deep cast featuring Anjelica Huston, Bryce Dallas Howard and Matt Frewer. Anna Kendrick (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World) is particularly endearing as an awkward, in-over-her-head therapist. But it's Gordon-Levitt who once again proves himself one of the best actors of his age, turning in a performance that ranges from reserved, to raging, to jovial. While emotionally heavy, the best parts of the film are the well-earned moments of charm whenever the bald-headed Adam cracks a smile.
