50 Foot Wave | Music | Halifax, Nova Scotia | THE COAST

Published June 17, 2004.50 Foot Wave50 Foot Wave(4AD) Kirsten Hersh was one of the original indie rockers with her band Throwing Muses (formed in 1984). They are credited with helping to discover The Pixes and convincing her label, 4AD, to sign them. She is a singer-songwriter, a tortured artist (she suffers from severe bouts of depression) and a survivor in the extremely fickle business of music. 50 Foot Wave is a means to an end: this is the first in a series of EPs to be released every nine months, allowing Hersh and her band to kick out the jams live. This EP is smoky, loud and reminiscent of all that was musically excellent in the early ’90s. —Colin MacKenzie
