Day 33 – It’s a Gas, Part Two

It’s midnight on Saturday night, and instead of partying I am home watching television and typing this blog. I’m not a big Halloween fan, and the rain has officially given me an excuse to stay home. This will allow me to catch up on my writing, and also gives me a much-needed rest. I’ll save the spooky stuff for another night, thank you.

Running almost every day for the last five weeks has definitely put me on the road to fitness (and, to a lesser extent, sobriety), but I am not sure that my writing has improved. I have noticed a lot of redundancies in my phrasing and word choices, and sometimes I cringe when I look at what I have placed on the page. Then again, how many different words can I use to replace the word run? I think a change of subject is in order, and soon.

For now, however, I will stick to running. On Thursday night I splurged and bought new clothes for the race – shoes, pants, a hat and gloves. I hope I’ll be able to get away with shorts and a long sleeve shirt on marathon day – rendering everything but the shoes useless – but the weather could end up being shitty and there is no way I am wearing ill-fitting, water soaked clothes for three or four hours. Better safe than sorry, even if it drains my bank account.

After I picked up my new duds I celebrated with a quick meal and a workout at the gym. I initially considered a protein bar before going for the perfect pre-run meal – tofu curry. I knew it was mistake because of the spice factor but I didn’t care because hadn’t eaten all day and I was starving. Belly full, I plodded my way to the treadmills and attempted a five-mile run at race pace.

Big mistake. I managed to finish it, but not without some severe stomach discomfort. I will repeat – do not eat spicy or unfamiliar foods before a workout, because bad things will happen. Why didn’t I listen to myself last week?

I don’t know. Perhaps I thought that last Thursday’s blog was worth repeating. Sequels are big bucks at the box office, and God knows I need all the money I can get after my spending spree. Anyone spare a dime?
