Day 18 – More treadmill trials

It’s 9PM on Friday night and I am back in Hampton, New Brunswick, drinking Scotch with my good pal Chris. And, if you want to know, I have already consumed two hamburgers and two giant cookies since I left work. It’s probably not a good idea for many reasons, the main one being that I have a cold, but I have allowed myself one fun night a week and this is it. I’ll deal with the physical repercussions tomorrow, but for now it’s time to party. Hopefully alcohol kills viruses as well as it kills brain cells.

My track workout was rained out for the second week in a row, and again I found myself suffering through repeat miles on the treadmill. I probably shouldn’t favour the treadmill over the outdoors when the weather is shitty, because I can’t predict the weather and the marathon could fall on a rainy, cold, windy morning. I need to mentally prepare myself for terrible conditions, because I can’t back out on race day.

After some careful deliberation, I decided eight miles at 6:58 per mile would suffice, and jumped into the workout without any sort of warmup. I usually would jog for 10-15 minutes beforehand, but it was 8:30 when I started running and I needed to finish up before the gym closed. I was also feeling the rising tide of nasal discomfort, and didn’t feel like pushing it more than necessary. Better safe than sorry I guess (this coming from the guy who is currently boozing it up).

The repeats weren’t too taxing, and were made easier by the quality subtitled television emanating from the cardio room. No, it wasn’t a hockey game or the NLCS, it was Grey’s Anatomy. I used to leave the house when Megan (my girlfriend, in case you were wondering) would bring friends over on Sunday night, but at some point I started watching it too. I knew I was hopelessly hooked when I started watching it one weekend when Megan wasn’t around, and by the end of last season I was recapping episodes for Megan. It was that bad.

Grey pulled me through the last six miles of my run, and had I been allowed I would have run an extra couple of minutes just to the see the ending of the episode. Unfortunately, I had to get off the treadmill at 9:50 to allow the folks at Nubody’s to close, so I hopped in the shower and trudged home.

All was not lost, however. Megan was just starting to watch the episode on a different channel, and I ended up sitting through the entire thing just to see the ending. I am a sad, sad little man.

Well, it’s time to get back to my Scotch. I don’t plan on drinking too much, but it’s 20 to ten and I can already feel the heat in my belly going straight to my head. Tomorrow could be a very long day.
