You make me wanna soup

Five places serving up an edible equivalent to a bear hug.

Your toes and fingers are perma-cold, your throat is on the scratchy side and the idea of being swaddled at home on your couch beats just about anything else. Except maybe a piping hot, hand-warmer/meal hybrid. From chunk chilis to spicy phos and every butternut squash blend in between, Halifax’s menus have lots of hot stuff to offer. Here are five standout slurpables that’ll keep you warm and well fed.

Tako Sushi and Ramen

Ramen at Tako Sushi and Ramen
Tako Sushi and Ramen is as good an excuse as any to make a trip to the strip malls of Parkland Drive. Apart from serving up some of the city’s best sushi, Kevin Chen brings the heat with his rich and varied ramen selection. The standout Hokkaido ramen, though, boasts a steaming pork-bone broth, trimmed to perfection with barbecued pork, egg, mushrooms, corn and sprouts. 480 Parkland Drive

Happy Veal Hot Pot

Hot pot at Happy Veal Hot Pot
This is a full-body soup experience. The sort of meal that you want to indulge in slowly, with good company. Happy Veal’s hot pot offerings allow you to get creative with your creation, checking off items from a list of meats, veggies and handmade noodles to add to your table’s bottomless, bubbling pot of broth (the half-spicy, half-original comes highly recommended for good reason) to your stomach’s content. Choose your own soup adventure, cook it up in front of your very eyes and immediately start planning your next visit. 1333 South Park Street

Soups on the Move

Hot Italian at Soup’s on the Move
Trevor and Tracy Axford took over the city’s only soup-and-sandwich-centric food trailer this fall, and continue to stir up the homey pots of hot stuff that Burnside-based regulars have known and loved over the years. Trevor’s signature creation, though, is the Hot Italian, which serves up spoonfuls of ground pork, tomatoes, carrots, onions, celery and his secret spice concoction for kick. 41 Akerley Boulevard, streetfoodapp.com/halifax

Hali Deli

Matzah ball soup at Hali Deli
Comfort is the name of the game at Agricola Street’s cozy, family-run neighbourhood hangout Hali Deli, and Sybil Fineberg’s made-from- scratch soups are centre stage during these bone-chilling months. When it comes to her matzah ball soup, the difference is in the fact she uses a whole chicken when she’s cooking up a massive batch of this “Jewish penicillin,” resulting in big, moist chunks of bird and a pretty darn unbeatable homestyle broth. 2389 Agricola Street

Souper Duper Soups

Donair soup at Souper Duper Soup
After being laid off at the same time, friends Roz Wilson-Oliver and Jenn Service got creative and started their soup delivery biz, which is now also a cozy eat-in/take-out location in downtown Dartmouth. Their menu changes weekly, but one item’s a constant—Friday’s famous donair soup. With a consistency comparable to chili, it’s a mix of spiced ground beef, tomatoes, onions and house donair sauce. Wilson-Oliver calls it “donair without the regret.” 156 Ochterloney Street
