Apart from serving up some of the city’s best sushi, Kevin Chen brings the heat with his rich and varied ramen selection. The standout Hokkaido ramen, though, boasts a steaming pork-bone broth, trimmed to perfection with barbecued pork, egg, mushrooms, corn and sprouts.

Hot pot at Happy Veal Hot Pot
This is a full-body soup experience. The sort of meal that you want to indulge in slowly, with good company. Hot Italian at Soup’s on the Move
Trevor and Tracy Axford took over the city’s only soup-and-sandwich-centric food trailer this fall, and continue to stir up the homey pots of hot stuff that Burnside-based regulars have known and loved over the years. Trevor’s signature creation, though, is the Hot Italian, which serves up spoonfuls of ground pork, tomatoes, carrots, onions, celery and his secret spice concoction for kick.

Matzah ball soup at Hali Deli
Comfort is the name of the game at Agricola Street’s cozy, family-run neighbourhood hangout Hali Deli, and Sybil Fineberg’s made-from- scratch soups are centre stage during these bone-chilling months. When it comes to her matzah ball soup, the difference is in the fact she uses a whole chicken when she’s cooking up a massive batch of this “Jewish penicillin,” resulting in big, moist chunks of bird and a pretty darn unbeatable homestyle broth.

Donair soup at Souper Duper Soup
After being laid off at the same time, friends Roz Wilson-Oliver and Jenn Service got creative and started their soup delivery biz, which is now also a cozy eat-in/take-out location in downtown Dartmouth. Their menu changes weekly, but one item’s a constant—Friday’s famous donair soup. With a consistency comparable to chili, it’s a mix of spiced ground beef, tomatoes, onions and house donair sauce. Wilson-Oliver calls it “donair without the regret.”
