Killer combination
Alicia Hoyt

Yan's Restaurant
752 Sackville Drive
At this Sackville family restaurant, which specializes in Cantonese and Szechuan, every combination is under $10, every extra add-on (extra spare ribs, please!) is $3.50 and the classics—you know, the sweet and sour chicken, almond gai ding, beef and broccoli deals—are a cool $7.95.

Jean's Restaurant
5972 Spring Garden Road
Portion control is not something you think about when ordering from Jean's—a combo plate from here is the kind you can revisit a few times before the work day ends. The classic sweet and sour chicken balls meal will run you $9.99 in the evening, but order before 3pm any day and it's $7.49.

Silver Dragon
2827 Robie Street
This family-run restaurant's been dishing out Canadian Chinese and Szechuan meals from its dining room and delivery drivers for 30 years. During lunch (11:30am-3pm), you can feast on most combos for $7.95 (beef and broccoli, Szechuan chicken, soo gai, chicken chow mein, sweet and sour chicken), but outside of those hours you've still got plenty of high-piled options for under $10.

Loong 7 Restaurant
3559 Robie Street
This newish north end restaurant has a strong combo game for sure, with $8.95 getting you those mountains of sweet and sour chicken balls, or honey garlic ribs you so desire. If you're got an extra five bucks though, the rest of this menu is worth exploration.

Forbidden City
1518 Dresden Row
Lunch is the time to eat the cheapest at downtown northern Chinese restaurant, Forbidden City. Scrounge up $8.99 and you'll get yourself platter with an egg roll, rice and chicken in chop suey, gai ding or ball form, or $8.25 for a veggie-friendly version.
