Ex-Oasis singer Liam Gallagher was spotted at Biscuit General Store last week, arriving in the city while Eastern Front Theatre’s SuperNova Theatre Festival coincidentally graces the Neptune stage. In honour of the two, we’ve gathered a few places for you to fill your glass of champagne supernova.
Bishop’s Cellar
This local wine shop has more to celebrate than a mid-’90s song: It’s Bishop’s Cellar’s (pictured) seventh birthday today, and it’s partying from 5-8pm with cupcakes, sandwiches, pizza and drinks from labels the shop’s been carrying throughout its existence. “It’s free and open to anyone who wants to come by and wish us a happy birthday,” says sommelier and staff member Kathryn Harding. As for champagne to fill your glass (not part of the free birthday bash), Harding suggests Montaudon ($53/bottle), or their feature summer brand: Terre Gaie Prosecco (not a champagne, but close in taste and easier on the wallet at $19/bottle). Gio (Prince George Hotel)
The hotel bar carries a champagne cocktail: a wild hibiscus flower placed in a glass of Moet et Chandon champagne, with raspberry and rhubarb syrup to give it a crimson glow ($18/glass). For something simpler, you can get Moet et Chandon by the glass (without the flower) for $18, or bottles of various other brands of champagne and sparkling wine.

The Carleton
The Carleton hosted SuperNova’s party Tuesday night, and serves champagne by the bottle but not the glass. Owner Mike Campbell says he does sell “a lovely Jacob’s Creek sparkling chardonnay by the glass though, and it’s the bubbly of choice for most festive occasions in the place.” Cheers.
