Economy Shoe Shop, 1663 Argyle, 423-7643

The theme here is Mediterranean out of an old Architectural Digest, in golds and yellows with niches for the bottles and glassware. At the Shoe Shop entrance, heavy stained glass-type lamps light the five high bar stools (the bar itself with a wabi sabi patina of burns and nudges) that are showing their age; closer to the back are lower, comfy chairs and tables to relax in at the end of a long work week. Up high are ferociously dusty retro knick-knacks. When empty it’s comfy in an old world-weary way; when full it’s decorated by the modern moving and shaking patrons.

Runner-up: Deco, 5518 Spring Garden, 423-9795
