Best Bakery

Julien’s Pastry Shop, 5517 Young, 455-9717

Didier Julien has been a patissier for 30 years. He started out in France and opened the first Julien’s in Chester in 1991. Everything for the town bakery is made out there, and it’s all mouth-watering. Co-owner Laura Mulrooney says they have a combo of clientele: Some just pop in for bread, some are regulars for coffee and a snack and some are Saturday regulars, coming for all of it. And why not? The breads are heaven—loaves of substance made from European recipes, plus adaptations of local favourites like brownies and muffins.

Runner-up: Gingerbread Haus, 1138 Queen, 425-4333
