On the morning after the hurricane, looking through the wrought iron fence of the Public Gardens was a harrowing sight. “It’s like a deathcamp for trees,” my friend said to me. Now, after the success of the $1 million-plus fundraising radiothon and with the efforts of HRM’s park maintenance staff, Halifax’s horticultural treasure is set to reopen to the public at the usual time next spring, on Victoria Day weekend. So even though you’re not actually allowed to get married in the Public Gardens, all of you out there who are madly thumbing the pages of Modern Bride can rest easy: The bulbs have all been planted, the repairs are underway and Halifax’s number one wedding photo destination will be sitting pretty in 2004.
