Poster Poles

In John Carpenter’s 1988 opus They Live, the hero (played by Rowdy Roddy Piper) discovers a pair of sunglasses that allow him to see the subliminal reality hidden just beneath the surface of our daily life. Dollar bills embossed with the slogan “This is your God!” Newspapers and magazines blaring the headline: “Submit to authority!” And, most nefarious of all, billboards that encourage rampant heterosexuality—so that we will mate, reproduce and raise more human beings to do the bidding of our space alien overlords. Clearly though such a thing could never happen. I refuse to submit to a culture of paranoia and so I refuse to believe that the HRM would have intentionally installed a series of massive circumsized penises at key locations in the downtown core in order to constantly bombard my brain with messages of SEX SEX SEX SEX SEX SEX SEX.

Runner-up: Marine Venus, Dalhousie statue on University Avenue at Henry Street
