Seems the Mexican food voters like best is, in fact, not really Mexican at all. “We serve California-style Mexican,” says Mexicali Rosa’s owner Dave Turk. “Dishes are mostly baked as opposed to deep-fried, and the recipes are more tomato-based, not as spicy as traditional Mexican fare.” Turk says the food is made from scratch, and people seem to like the laid-back atmosphere. (Two-and-a-half ounces of liquor in every margarita can’t hurt, either.)
