Best Local Daily Newspaper

Winner: Daily News

There was once a time when the Daily was run on a shoestring by people who were willing to work hard and sacrifice because, even without a lot of resources or an owner from a newspaper tradition, the upstart paper was at least as good as the competition. Readers could feel that scrappy energy and approved—plus the tabloid format made it easier to read. Now that the Daily is owned by deep-pocketed self-described believer in newspapers Conrad Black, the staff has even fewer resources and they run around nervous about being sacrificed in the name of a better profit margin for Connie. But at least it’s still a convenient tabloid.

Runner-up: Chronicle-Herald
