The Rick White Album

News of a Rick White album should bring to mind early Elevator to Hell records — songs were recorded the day of conception on a four-track. But this isn’t that kind of record. Nor is it the sonic and psychedelic overload of Elevator. It fits somewhere in the middle — predominantly acoustic with carefully crafted overdubs of an echoing electric or double acoustic guitars, layered vocals and the occasional bird. “Mirror Me,” in which he sings of a departed friend, or “Darkland” (which tells of the girl with long black hair) could be interpreted as being about his recent break-up with Tara White. But one thing is for sure: Rick White — the dark poet, the prolific songwriter and uncompromising master of his craft — has enriched us again with another superb album.
