"It's all hyper-sexual, Aquarian music, and I think that's what a lot of Seattle music is about right now," says Erin Birgy of the west coast dream-ambience band, Mega Bog. "Themes include accountability, swimming nude, miscommunication and the burning love that's consistent within the present moment we're sharing. That's probably true forever and everywhere, in a smeared sense."
On Tuesday, Mega Bog makes their first-ever Halifax stop with locals Nap Eyes and The Lauras. The fluid five-piece will skinny-dip from their newest record, Gone Banana, a collection of vocal and aural whispers set against sassy jazz saxophone and dissonant sounds. It must be something in the Pacific.
"I think what sets Mega Bog, and our other band iji and some other Seattle groups apart, is the inconsistency of our music," describes Birgy. Five releases since 2011 mix and match many musicians.
"We're a very unreliable group and we make truly unreliable music," says Birgy, "I always try to mix in new players and try out new pieces of music, gear and attitudes. The sound ends up as a wild child, as are most of the people who play in Mega Bog." Anywhere from five to 10 musicians play with her on various tours, but she says Zach Burba, bandmate since 2009, is Birgy's "most influential soul sister."
So far this year, the band has accomplished one of its dreams, when Birgy and Burba went on a western tour with Sheer Agony: "It was so awesome to have a van full of separate-coast's VIPs pile into a van, screaming Joni's 'California.'" On this east coast stop, Mega Bog has a special line-up ready in the undercurrent, including some of Sheer Agony: "I'm playing with the sweetest crumbs from the cobbler."
