Earth Sciences
(Paper Bag Records)
Laura Barrett (of The Hidden Cameras) plays thumb piano all over this EP. In fact, it’s only thumb piano and Barrett’s youthful voice on Earth Sciences, with the exception of one remix. Still, the songs never sound tired. Like Ruth Minnikin, Barrett’s stories are by turns imaginative and absurd (thus the Weird Al cover) or contemplative and sincere. Percussive and melodic, the versatility of the thumb piano---known as the lokembe or kalimba---is amazing. It can sound sad and mournful or bright and celebratory. Many Halifax music fans know this, of course, thanks to this city’s Sudanese musical outfit, Kojo.
