Discover two hidden gems with On & Off the Wall: Peer Gallery Contemporary Art and Chase Gallery.

Pondering what artist and Peer Gallery member Bob Hainstock calls "problems-opportunities," this show from Lunenburg's Peer Gallery—in conjunction with its 17th anniversary—explores the vibrancy of rural artist communities while also considering the problems they face. Rural brick and mortar galleries can have a short lifespan: Hainstock reports that at least 30 rural galleries have closed since 2000 (though nearly as many have been created in that time), so a 17th anniversary of such an organization seems like an exciting thing to celebrate.

The exhibition features work by 16 of Peer's members, and is hung to highlight each artist individually. From Jane Whitten's bottle cap and woven plastic sculptures to Barbara McLean's large abstract paintings, the diversity of the artwork highlights the truly cooperative nature of the gallery.

The second hidden gem is of course the Chase Exhibition Gallery, tucked away inside the Nova Scotia Archives. So whether you're an urbanite interested in exploring on of Halifax's many galleries, or interested in reading Bob Hainstock's report "A Way Forward for Rural Art Galleries," a visit to Chase could be just the ticket.
