The Old Mill Upstairs (200 Wyse Road) is any self-respecting punk fans' only location next weekend, front row centre for East Coast Punk Fest 2009. Presented by Fight to Live Productions, it's the fest's second year since the 1990s Cafe Ole days. Organizer Earl Joudrey is eager to keep the tradition alive. "It was something I always enjoyed and figured others did as well," says Joudrey. "It's something we need." The festival started early with a battle of the bands last Saturday at CD Heaven to determine which young whippersnapper band would play the festival. Broken Ankles, Infection, Buy Nothing Life, The Inadequacies and High Crimes all battled it out. "Buy Nothing Life, a folk, punk band, were the surprise of the night with their brand and style. They missed out on victory by only one vote. They were lots of fun to watch and listen to." says Joudrey. "The Inadequacies from Guysborough County were killer and have a lot of potential if given the opportunity. High Crimes won the battle with their brand of hardcore punk." Congratulate them in person next weekend! Line up is as follows: Saturday, October 17 (all ages show at 5pm) Total Bastards, Gone Drinkin', Dunce Club and one more TBA. Later that evening at 10pm catch Moncton's Hope, Flagship Sinker (their first show in four years), Get Wrecked, Moncton's Nothing to No One, The Dead Pinkertons and My Band Sucks! Sunday, October 18 (all ages show at 2pm) see Last Laugh, Contagium, Criminal Intent, Road Rash and High Crimes. Advance passes are available at CD Heaven. All ages pass $8, all three shows (19+) for $12.
