Brief Interviews with Hideous Men

Written and directed by John Krasinski (IFC Films)

Sara Quinn (Julianne Nicholson), an anthropology PhD student, gets dumped by her boyfriend (Krasinski). The event clarifies the purpose and structure of her doctoral work and her interviews with different guys: to understand who men are, how they help and harm themselves and others, even when they don’t intend to do one or the other. It’s not always this setup---one person in front and the other behind the camera---that works best: watch for Timothy Hutton, as seasoned faculty and Sara’s academic advisor, give an unintentional interview about his wife’s beauty. Based on a David Foster Wallace book, this comes off as a Krasinski vanity project: wait for his overly long, indulgent monologue. The result of Sara’s inquiry isn’t shown and the success of Krasinski’s work isn’t either.
