Get your Greek on

Sex and song come together in 2b Theatre's The God That Comes

There’s something about the Marquee Ballroom that echoes with debauchery past, an air that makes it the perfect setting for The God That Comes, 2b Theatre’s electric, wine-soaked cabaret/rock-and-roll show.

The show is steeped in the wine, song and sex of Greek mythology, with singer/songwriter Hawksley Workman transforming himself into Pentheus, the uptight, sexually-repressed ruler, Agave his dissolute mother and Bacchus, the amoral, pleasure-strewing god.

Workman mesmerizes both musically and theatrically. He flits among several instruments, and builds tuneful layers through clever musical loops. The opening number, with its driving rhythm, is particularly hypnotic, and sets the mood for the orgiastic revelries to come.

A plot summary by Workman at the beginning of the show is helpful (and I think necessary) to enable the audience to thread together the narrative, but it in this show, it’s not really the plot that matters.

What truly stands out is Workman’s slyly sexy performance and 2b’s brilliantly creative theatrical imagery.

April 17 to 21 at the Marquee Club, restricted to ages 19 and up.
Doors open at 7:15, show time is 8 p.m.
Tickets are $35 regular/$26 student via the etix link at www.2btheatre.com.
