Congratulations are in order for Andrea Dorfman on her Emmy nomination in the 33rd News and Documentary Emmy Awards for the warm, personal and charming Flawed. Nominated in the “New Approaches to News & Documentary Programming: Documentaries” category and broadcasted on PBS’ POV, Dorfman’s Flawed tells her simple, touching story through watercolour paintings about self-love and acceptance. A shortened version can be viewed online at

“I think the world of television is opening up to all different kinds of art forms. there is so much blending of formats and viewers are so literate in every which way of taking in a story,” says Dorfman. “I guess at the end of the day, it's about storytelling. if the story is strong, the audience will connect to it—however it's told.”

As far as breaking ground on a pool shaped like a dollar sign goes, Dorfman is holding off for now. “I can't see it changing things for me at all. Don't get me wrong, I love that the film and the NFB and PBS all get the attention. If anything, it might extend the life of the film a little longer. As far as my own work, I doubt it will change anything. It's a pretty obscure category—and I'm up against HBO so I don't think I'll win. It always feels good to be nominated for something. And an Emmy? It just sounds so absurd!”

And so continues the Emmy streak for ground-breaking locals, this is the second local nomination this year under their "New Approaches" umbrella, the first being Jason Nickel's nomination (and subsequent win) in the 39th Annual Daytime Entertainment Emmy Awards. And let's not forget Coast alum Kate O'Connor's nomination for best Commercial for "The Bark Side" (Volkswagen), Deutsch LA & Caviar Films. Go team!
