Cabaret Serpentine has one goal and one goal only: to make you swoon with the love of bellydance. You can see them manifest their destiny with ADORNED this Sunday, May 29 at Casino Nova Scotia’s Schooner Showroom.

The Serpentine sisters—Laura Selenzi and Monique Ryan—showcase bellydance, Indian dance and more. But they won’t be doing it alone. Colleena Shakti is an international performer who travels throughout India performing her mesmerizing fusion Rajasthani dance. “To see a western woman so completely embody the dances of India is incredible, her presence is stunning,” Selenzi says. Shakti will be teaching three workshops while in Halifax, so if you’ve ever had a hankering to learn Indian fusion bellydance, Odissi classical dance or Rajasthani “gypsy” dance, the workshops will be held at DANSpace and the Bloomfield Centre on May 27-30. For details on the workshops, see www.cabaretserpentine.com.

If you are more of an observer than a participant, fear not! Sunday’s show promises to be a doozy. “We will also be bringing in our favorite bellydancers from the Atlantic provinces, so you'll get to see a wide variety of styles and interpretations of this dance. We'll be showcasing everything from Egyptian to tribal fusion, and even Monique Ryan's hula hoop bellydance.”

Like the performances, Laura Selenzi’s love of bellydance is infectious, “I first saw bellydance in a theatrical production 13 years ago and was instantly spellbound. The music and movements really spoke to me, and when I started taking classes I found the movements just felt right to my body. I love the breadth of emotions one can express with this dance, from joy to flirtation to sorrow.”

Tickets for ADORNED are $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Available at Pretty Things Boutique, or at http://www.cabaretserpentine.com/Colleena.html
