Starting this Saturday, May 7 at 8am with a killer yard sale and wrapping up next Sunday, May 15 with an Italian dinner and movie night, the week will feature film screenings, a mother’s day brunch, an art auction, a bicycle scavenger hunt, homemade pizzas bike delivered to your home (vegan option available), live music, a social night, book making and artist trading card making workshops and possibly the best idea ever: deluxe candy grams. The order forms for said candy grams will be available at all the events and other locations to be announced. Just think about how hard you’d fall for someone who sent you a candy gram. You’d love them forever.
The Anchorless Archive Zinemobile will be rolling near and far this week, so check out this convenient zine delivery system. The diverse selection of fundraising events can be credited to how the centre is run. Roberts Street Social Centre is operated by a collective of (apparently very creative people) who each brought a fundraising idea to the table and coordinated it.
The centre is run on a shoestring budget, with no government funding, and has offered consistent access to independent and alternative media, art and education. The centre is home base for the Ink Storm Screenprinting Collective, the Anchor Archive Zine Library and the Roberts Street Residency. Anchor Archive co-founder Sarah Evans says, “after a winter of paying heat, bank account is low. It’s also a good way to get ready for summer, a good kick off for the residents.” Summertime is usually “off the hook busy” at the centre due to the residency. The residency features a rotating cast of artists that live in the shed beside the centre for two weeks at a time, working on projects.
Evans hopes this week will “get folks excited and new people introduced to the space.” With a list of fundraising events as long as your arm, there should be something for everyone.
If you are unable to make any of these events, but still feel like contributing, you can make a donation via the Roberts Street Social Centre fan club (email for info [email protected]). For the full schedule, visit www.robertsstreet.org
