A few bands round here have kicked off the New Year by putting their music online for you. Some choice tracks include Husband and Knife’s sonorous cover of Joy Division’s “Disorder” at husbandknife.bandcamp.com, Quivers’ ripping “Graveyard” from http://quivers.bandcamp.com and a Kills-perfect “Death Rattle Blues” from Cursed Arrows at cursedarrows.bandcamp.com.
You can also check out songs from Jon McKiel's Confidence Lodge (officially coming out Feb 5) at jonmckiel.bandcamp.com. The album was recently lauded by Herohill as one of the best of 2011. You can buy individual songs there for $1 each. They are all wonderful, actually and the sleepy ways of "Monster of the Miramichi" in particular give me that Sebadoh/Hayden vibe that's been missing from my life recently. Really looking forward to that release.
And if you would like to bone up on Kestrels' The Solipsist before the official 7" release at the Seahorse on Saturday, you can go here. This is another great wee release that soars in these swoony grungy ways and will make you feel like a teen again, hanging your head out of car windows and slurping slushies from big cups. I put "What Happens" on a Christmas mix for my friend and he flipped for the song's wobbly guitars and hope-riddled breakdowns, which reminded us both of pre-terrible Weezer. In short, it's hard to describe music in an exciting way sometimes, and you should just listen to the songs.
If you put music online, send the links to me at [email protected]. Like Dr. Frasier Crane, I’m listening.
