Like a spiny-winged butterfly, the dudes in Last Call Chernobyl have gone through a beautiful metamorphosis. When the local prog-metal act formed in 2007, it was mainly for kicks. “It was a way for us to wind down after a rough day,” says guitarist Matt Moulton. When they won Music Nova Scotia’s Battle of the Bands and a subsequent slot on the 2010 Vans Warped Tour last November, the band realized their hobby had become a career. Moulton says this required a shift in mindset.” We've realized that the only reason we're in this position right now is because our music is a somewhat decent product and there's a market for it,” he says. As the Warped Tour dates approach, the group has rushed to develop themselves through promotion, logos, merchandise, and of course, through the important business of recording, producing and distributing their debut album, Drowning Beneath the Sound of Change. It’s a daunting process, but Moulton says they’ve received ample support from Diminished Fifth Records, the label they’ve called home since March. On top of everything else, Last Call Chernobyl will be the first band representing D5 in the U.S. It’s a lot of pressure, but the band says they’re too wrapped up in frenetic preparations to be nervous. “The reality we're in right now feels too outlandish and crazy to even rationalize it with stress,” Moulton says. The band is looking for your love at their CD release at the Seahorse on June 18th. Their first Warped Tour date is June 27th.
