Up In The North

Posted By on Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 10:40 AM

Hey, it's your friendly neighbourhood Listings Ed here, taking over for Tara Thorne, who jetted off today to hobnobb with the stars at the Toronto International Film Festival. Keep yer eyes peeled for her TIFF blog. And don't get your panties in a twist: she'll be back soon. In the meantime, can we tell you about some stuff happening this weekend? Huzzah! So it's all about the North End love this weekend (and as someone who recently moved into the area, we couldn't be more tickled.) It starts with the George Dixon Community Festival, which is a family fun event taking place at the Dixon grounds on Friday. Then it's Go North! on Saturday Sept 6th. The third annual community n' culture festival will feature galleries throwing their doors open, tours, exhibitions in people's houses, gardens, felt puppets, and other fun times. This includes our favorite event, Cafe DaPoPo at the Good Food Emporium (2179 Gottingen) where patrons will be serenaded by the song and dance skills of talented local personalities at their dining table from noon to 6pm. Don't use up all your energy on Saturday, though, because the Third Annual North End Community Festival is going on the next day. Gottingen Street will be shut down between Cunard and Cornwallis to make way for performances by sexy musicians like Windom Earle, Jon McKiel, Ghettosocks, Asia & Nu Gruv and Shane C. If all these sweet jams inspire you, there's a North End Idol competition where you can make like Mitch MacDonald (or, you know, not.) Plus there will be tons of street vendors and food. And there ain't no party like a North End party without jumping castles. It all starts at noon.
