Zombies win award

Posted on Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 2:00 PM

Faith Erin Hicks, whose debut graphic novel, Zombies Calling, we profiled last November, has won the Joe Shuster Award for Favourite Canadian Comic Book Creator – English Language Publications.Named after the Canadian-born creator of Superman, the annual Joe Shusters recognize the achievements of Canuck comic creators. Hicks couldn’t attend the ceremony on June 14 in Toronto for financial reasons, but says, “Honestly though, if I’d thought I’d had a chance of winning, I would’ve hitchhiked to Toronto to attend the ceremony. Unfortunately I assumed that because Zombies Calling was my first book and because so many great books had been published by Canadians this year, that there was no way I’d win and it wasn’t crucial to attend the awards. And look what happened!” Hicks says that even though she’s over the moon about the win, it’s still a bit terrifying. “I feel that maybe expectations are higher now for my comics. My next graphic novel is coming up fairly soon, and I feel like the pressure is on to produce something really good. Of course, the pressure is all in my head. It’s not like my publisher is standing over me with a whip, yelling, 'MAKE BETTER COMICS!'” Her second graphic novel, The War at Ellsmere, scheduled to come out this December, is about “a poor but smart girl who gets a scholarship to a prestigious boarding school and the intrigue, friendships and danger she experiences there. The book also has one of the most ruthless and ambitious villains I’ve ever written...who happens to be a 13-year-old girl.”
