Pop and the City | Music | Halifax, Nova Scotia | THE COAST

Sometimes it feels like the closest that arts comes to being an election issue are reruns of the movie Election. (Why can't Tracy Flick run for mayor?) So, culture lovers, keep this in mind on October 18: Halifax Pop Explosion was denied city funding even though on page 13, policy four, of HRM's Civic Events Policy and Framework, it says that it will "provide support to...professional festivals...eg....Halifax Pop Explosion." Huh? There is some good news---some other well-deserving festivals received increased financial support and I've been told by HPX director Waye Mason, that the festival is doing well with sponsorships and provincial funding, and is planning to resubmit an application to the newly formed HRM Special Events Advisory Committee. So now is a good time to let the committee chair and mayoral candidate Sheila Fougere know how much HPX and this city's cultural welfare means to you: email [email protected] or phone 490-4087.
