Jeff Torbert (guitar), Adam Fine (bass) and Doug Cameron (percussion) are T, F and C, respectively, in TFC, Halifax’s improvisational wonders. Not content with the regular bar scene, the band is branching out by playing the Neptune Studio Theatre on Monday, April 7 (8pm, $15). With guest performers Matt Myer (trumpet), Dave Christensen (sax) and filmmaker Jeff Wheaton using lights and props to add to the general spectacle, it should be an evening to remember for lovers of jazzy improv. The show will be filmed for a future multimedia release, and will be recorded by CBC Radio 2, but you may get a sneak peek by checking the band’s website. “Some of the film from the project will most likely be leaked out on our website, but depending on how it turns out, we’ll combine it with our live/studio project slated for release by the end of the year,” says Torbert. “We knew we wanted to make this show special by filming it and using props like antique lamps and old radios, and Jeff Wheaton was the perfect fit, with his enormous creative spirit and diverse experience with music videos and other like-minded projects.” The usually instrumental group is also planning on debuting a brand new song: one with lyrics. “I’ve kept my lyrical musings separate from TFC’s creative output up until now, but in Liverpool for NS Music Week the guys started playing along to a tune I was singing, and it just felt so natural that we had to arrange it for TFC. We’ve always operated under an inclusive approach musically, and including lyrics is a logical extension of that,” says Torbert. “I think this show is launching us into new territory in a lot of ways artistically, and we’re going to continue in the direction of uncommon venues and diverse collaborations.” Why, those are the best kind of venues and collaborations! The instrumental group is debuting new compositions, including their first with lyrics.
