Poseidon surfaces

Posted By on Thu, Feb 7, 2008 at 8:58 AM

The aptly named Poseidon’s Trident Sound System are playing a brief but powerful stint at the Seahorse, filling in for Verbal Warnin’ on their RockSteady night for the next two Wednesdays. DJs Jeremy Hawkins and Matt Mills, with Verbal Warnin’ percussionist and Youth Club Records founder Andy March on melodica and mixer, have grand musical plans you should get in on. The group makes authentic sound-system music by playing records and layering various effects with vintage materials over the top. “The DJs are roots-o-philes. They collect Jamaican pressings from the ’70s, like reggae, old dancehall, old dub, rocksteady, ska, Lee Perry, Prince Jammy, King Tubby, Studio One, Horace Andy and The Abyssinians,” says March. “They always throw in some modern conscious music, too, like Lutan Fiya and the odd dancehall floor-smasher.” The local reggae and rocksteady scene is small but vibrant and, with Andru Branch’s recent CD release, it looks like the scene is growing. “When Studio One legend Brian Atkinson steps on stage , that’s a pretty good start. Verbal Warnin’ gave up the Wednesday gig to record, so we’ll see what happens when that comes out. My label, Youth Club, is a reggae label in disguise, but these things take time,” jokes March. “These Wednesdays are a way to inspire us and to try to build a tradition of reggae in town and give everyone a chance to get down on the dance floor to the greatest dance music of all time---rocksteady.”
