It’s always a pleasure to listen to George Elliott Clarke, who’s reading Saturday, February 2, 2pm, at Carrefour Atlantic Emporium (1869 Upper Water), for African Heritage Month. Afterwards, Clarke will rush over to Pier 21 at 3pm to take part in their Global Chinese New Year celebration, kicking off the Year of the Rat with Coast fiction writer Anna Quon, Master Zhang Bi Han and others. Tickets are $15-$25, and available at Mu Lan (1360 Lower Water). And, because life isn’t fair, you’re not going to like that some of our In the Dead of Winter musicians are also talented artists. If you want to get pissed at the inequities of the universe, check out their show at FRED (2606 Agricola), with work by Jenn Grant, Dan Ledwell, Rose Cousins, Kyle Cunjak, Ruth Minnikin and Glen Nicholson. a
