January 21 at Stage Nine
It’s not often that a Halifax rock bar is near-capacity by 10pm, but In-Flight Safety managed to pull it off for their CD release show. While there was barely any room to move, the attendees were mostly courteous, making a relatively uncomfortable experience more bearable. After the inspired Mardeen and passionate songstress Emm Gryner warmed the stage, IFS eased into their set with the euphoric “The World Won’t.” Gradually working through their catalogue, while infusing The Inbreds’ “Any Sense Of Time” for good measure, the band truly found its groove during “That Day,” a subtle homage to a former bandmate. Almost mystified at the size of the audience, frontman John Mullane looked and sounded exhausted, altering his vocal arrangements to bypass his habitual falsetto on numerous occasions. Nevertheless, he was a man possessed, obviously elated to see the mix of old and new faces gathered to hear the band’s new material. While not your typical high-energy, late night bar band, the group put on a solid show, solidifying In-Flight’s reputation as one of this city’s brightest stars.
