The Sorrys will play at Gus’ Pub on May 3 and they are hoping for a visit from a very special guest. Members of the group have been lobbying rock legend Alice Cooper—performing at the Metro Centre the same night—to attend their show afterwards and meet drummer Steve Baur. A Dalhousie University musicologist, Baur is no ordinary fan.
“He teaches the History of Rock & Roll, among other things, and grew up in Hollywood and did his graduate years at UCLA. While there he ended up writing music entries for the Encyclopedia Britannica and penned their Alice Cooper piece,” says vocalist Trevor Millett. “We are trying to weed through Alice’s people in the hopes he’ll drop by the show to meet Steve. It will most likely never happen but you never know. It’s Steve’s birthday that night as well so it would be a nifty gift.”
So far, contacting Cooper (AKA Vincent Damon Furnier) via email, management, label and even Myspace has yet to produce results.
Scott’s Studio
Gallery Two at Studio 21 will house samples of art crafted by Halifax music royalty from May 5 through May 26. Three paintings by Sloan’s Andrew Scott will be displayed in an exhibit in conjunction with the works of Rob Shuebrook, a nationally known painter and former president of the Ontario College of Art and Design. Gallery director Ineke Graham expresses enthusiasm over the quickly approaching installation.
“I knew of Andrew also being a painter, and know both his mother Diane and sister Pam, having chatted with both,” she says. “We thought it a nice and a great opportunity for both the gallery and<\f>Andrew to show off his talents in the visual arts.”
Graham is excited to have the opportunity to present material from two Canadian icons. “It will be a new experience, where both artists are well known, albeit in different disciplines, and could benefit from each other’s fame,” she says.
Taking a break from Sloan’s eighth LP, Scott will be at the gallery to meet the public early on May 6.

@body alt no indent:Those anticipating a Halifax visit from alternative rock group Stabilo will be disheartened to be informed their bill with Montreal buzz act Mobile has been postponed. The Western rockers, who were slated to perform May 10 at The Attic, will instead support INXS across the street at the Metro Centre on May 9. Availability for that show has been confined to internet auctions since the on-sale date. Tickets for Pilate’s return to Halifax on June 24 will also be snapped up quickly; an opening set from Wintersleep all but guarantees a sell-out. The Marquee Club performance will be Wintersleep’s first 19+ local show since last February. Shock, excitement and disbelief are all words that came to mind when American alt-country sextet Wilco announced this week they will appear in Dartmouth and Fredericton on July 12 and 13. Bands and allies
The inaugural Halifax Band Alliance show kicks off April 6 at Frigate. A program in which the groups included commit to send at least one member to every show is an effort to increase exposure and networking avenues for emerging local bands. This Thursday features Fed Pennies, Satellite Rides, Human and Nye Sullivan Band.
