The Maritimes are swimming with pride: there’s a tale to be told of why people stay, why they have to leave and how they always come back. Vish Purgrass pays homage to our seabound coast through storytelling. Originally from the UK, the digital art director found himself swept up by the beauty of Nova Scotia and its people.
“The ocean is right in your backyard and the people here are approachable and personable,” he says, “so there’s a magical aspect in collecting their stories.” Purgrass knew finding consistent work in the industry here would be arduous, so instead of keeping his head above water, he dove in. He embraced his entrepreneurial spirit and passion to connect with people visually through launching his t-shirt company, Canada’s Ocean Playground, last summer.
Incorporating both panache and function, Purgrass’ intricate designs celebrate the musings of people who hold Nova Scotia dear. “We walk a tightrope here,” says Purgrass, whose shirts sell online for $20. “But I love what people are doing in town, it resonates. Why not do it together? I want to challenge mediocrity—let’s show people all the good we have here.”
